A Lightning Photography Photographers Storm Chaser Log

Boulder County, Colorado. Colorado Summers are the best! A typical summer day is a beautiful clear morning with clouds building in the early afternoon and thunderstorms in the late afternoon. The rain comes in and cools things down. Today July 31st, 2011 at about 7:00 pm it rained in buckets. Really cooled things off. We sat out on the porch and watched the rain. It was a very verbal storm with lots of thunder and big bolts.

This was the perfect storm for me. I like to go out a half hour before sunset. Well the rain stopped and I headed out. Scanned the horizon to where it was hitting. The closest was to the North. So I headed over to McIntosh lake. Watched for a few minutes before breaking out my gear. In about 20 minutes I got these lightning photography images. Fantastic lightning Bolts. I had to back off on my view because the bolts were starting so high up in the sky. This is a view looking across the lake to North Boulder County. Foothills Lightning Strikes

Next I took off to one of my favorite spots as it was hitting west on the foothills to the Continental Divide of the Rocky Mountains. By the time In got in place it was hitting on the other side and seem to be heading west, that is very unusual. Well I did not get my dream shot and will keep on trying.
